Dinotefuran
Description
Dinotefuran is a highly potent active ingredient belonging to the third generation of the neonicotinoid class of insecticides. It is widely recognized in modern agriculture for its systemic properties and broad-spectrum effectiveness against a variety of agricultural and horticultural pests that threaten crop productivity.
The primary mode of action of dinotefuran involves binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system of the insect. By mimicking the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, it causes uncontrolled neuronal excitation, leading to paralysis and the subsequent death of the target pest. This mechanism is effective through both contact and ingestion, making it highly versatile.
Dinotefuran is primarily used to manage a wide range of sucking and some chewing insect pests. Its efficacy covers numerous species, including but not limited to:
- aphids and whiteflies;
- thrips;
- leafhoppers;
- scale insects;
- certain types of heteroptera (bugs).
A distinctive feature of dinotefuran is its superior systemic activity compared to earlier neonicotinoids. It is rapidly absorbed by plants via leaves or roots and exhibits excellent translocation within the plant tissue. This allows for long-lasting protection, which is particularly beneficial in integrated pest management programs and soil drench applications for greenhouse or nursery crops.
Safety and handling are paramount when utilizing products containing dinotefuran. The compound is highly toxic to bees and other essential pollinators; therefore, applications during the flowering stage are strictly prohibited. Growers must wear appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure that product runoff does not contaminate water bodies, adhering to all local regulatory guidelines regarding pre-harvest intervals.
