Description

Ethephon is a widely used plant growth regulator belonging to the phosphonic acid chemical class. In modern agriculture, it serves primarily as an ethylene-releasing agent. Unlike pesticides such as herbicides or fungicides, ethephon is designed to manipulate physiological processes within plants, specifically those related to maturity, stress responses, and senescence.

The mechanism of action is based on the chemical decomposition of ethephon within plant tissues. As the internal pH of the plant cells is typically above 4.0, ethephon undergoes a rapid conversion that releases ethylene gas. This gas acts as a potent signaling molecule that triggers various physiological responses, including chlorophyll degradation, conversion of starch to sugars, and the induction of abscission layers for fruit detachment.

Farmers utilize ethephon extensively on cereal crops such as wheat and barley to manage plant height. By shortening the internodes and strengthening the stalks, ethephon acts as a powerful anti-lodging agent, which allows for higher seeding rates and increased fertilizer application without the risk of crop collapse. Additionally, it is essential in the fruit and vegetable sector for stimulating uniform ripening, color development, and facilitating mechanical harvesting of crops like tomatoes, grapes, and coffee.

The application of ethephon requires careful timing and monitoring of environmental conditions. Since the release of ethylene is temperature-dependent, applications should be performed within the specific thermal windows recommended on product labels to ensure consistent results. Excessive temperatures may lead to plant stress, while cool conditions can significantly diminish the efficacy of the treatment, requiring careful planning by the agronomist.

Safety remains a priority when handling ethephon. Although it is not considered highly toxic to humans, direct contact with the concentrate can cause significant irritation to the skin and eyes. Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment during mixing and application. Furthermore, strict adherence to pre-harvest intervals (PHI) is mandatory to ensure that chemical residues in the final produce remain well below the established regulatory safety limits.
