Flufenoxuron

Description

Flufenoxuron is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the benzoylurea chemical class. In modern agronomy, this compound is classified as an insecticide and acaricide with both stomach and contact activity, functioning primarily as an insect growth regulator (IGR).

The mode of action of flufenoxuron is centered on the inhibition of chitin synthesis in pests. By interfering with the formation of the insect cuticle during the molting process, the substance prevents larvae from successfully developing into the next stage, ultimately causing death. Furthermore, flufenoxuron exhibits strong ovicidal properties, effectively sterilizing eggs and preventing them from hatching.

This substance is used on a wide range of agricultural crops, including fruit trees, vineyards, vegetables in open and protected fields, and ornamental plants. Its primary use is in the control of various mite species (such as spider mites and gall mites) as well as lepidopteran pests, including leafrollers, armyworms, and moths.

A key application feature is the requirement for thorough coverage of the leaf surface, as the compound acts primarily through contact. It is essential to conduct treatments during peak periods of larval emergence or intensive egg-laying by pests to maximize the product's efficacy and ensure long-term crop protection.

  • High selectivity towards beneficial insects and natural predators.
  • Long residual activity due to excellent resistance to wash-off by rain.
  • Effective control of pest populations resistant to organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides.
  • Requirement for appropriate personal protective equipment during handling.

When applying flufenoxuron, users must strictly adhere to the regulatory guidelines provided in the product label. Although the compound generally demonstrates low toxicity to mammals, direct contact with skin or mucous membranes should be avoided. Adherence to pre-harvest intervals is mandatory to guarantee food safety and meet regulatory standards for crop produce.
