Fonofos

Description

Fonofos is a potent active ingredient classified as an organophosphate compound. In agricultural practice, it is primarily utilized as a soil-applied insecticide, designed to control a wide variety of soil-dwelling pests that can cause significant damage to emerging crops and root systems.

The mode of action of Fonofos involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase within the insect's nervous system. This disruption prevents the normal transmission of nerve impulses, leading to rapid paralysis and death of the target pest. It acts through both contact and ingestion, providing reliable control in various soil types.

This substance is effectively used on diverse crops, including corn, sugar beets, potatoes, and various vegetable species. It is specifically targeted against soil-inhabiting pests, which are often difficult to control with foliar sprays, such as:

  • wireworms (larvae of click beetles);
  • mole crickets;
  • seedcorn maggots;
  • root-feeding larvae.

Application of Fonofos typically involves incorporating granules into the soil at the time of planting. This technique is crucial for placing the active ingredient in the root zone, where it offers a persistent chemical barrier, protecting the plant during its most vulnerable seedling stage.

Due to its toxicity, strict adherence to safety protocols is mandatory when handling Fonofos. Operators must use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow label instructions regarding application rates and environmental restrictions. Careful management is necessary to ensure safety for the operator and to prevent any potential impact on non-target organisms or the surrounding environment.
