Zinc phosphide

Description

Zinc phosphide is an inorganic chemical compound that functions as a high-potency rodenticide. It is extensively utilized in agricultural sectors worldwide to manage populations of rats, mice, voles, and gophers that cause significant destruction to grain crops, fruit orchards, and stored agricultural commodities.

The mode of action of zinc phosphide is distinctively chemical: upon ingestion by the rodent, the compound reacts with the stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) to release phosphine gas (hydrogen phosphide). Phosphine is a highly toxic gas that enters the bloodstream, disrupting cellular respiration and causing rapid multi-organ failure, leading to the death of the pest within a short timeframe.

In field conditions, it is applied by placing pre-baited poisonous baits directly into rodent burrows. This targeted application is crucial for the safety of the environment. The application is common in fields of cereals, vegetable crops, and plantations where rodent damage threatens the yield. By placing the bait inside the burrows and covering them, the farmer ensures that only the target pests are exposed to the active ingredient.

Strict safety precautions must be followed during the handling and application of this product. It is highly toxic to humans and other non-target vertebrates. Workers must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, respiratory protection, and protective clothing to prevent dermal contact or inhalation of dust particles during bait preparation.

Effective management requires careful planning of the treatment timing to avoid conflict with the presence of protected wildlife species and migratory birds. Proper disposal of dead rodents is mandatory to prevent secondary poisoning of scavengers, such as raptors or domestic animals, in the vicinity of the treated area.
