Glufosinate-ammonium

Description

Glufosinate-ammonium is a highly effective, non-selective herbicide that belongs to the phosphinic acid chemical class. It is widely recognized in global agriculture for its ability to provide rapid control of both broadleaf and grass weeds, making it a critical tool for pre-plant burndown and orchard maintenance.

The mode of action of this substance involves the inhibition of the glutamine synthetase enzyme within plant tissues. By blocking this enzyme, the herbicide prevents the detoxification of ammonia within the plant, leading to a rapid accumulation of ammonia and the subsequent collapse of essential metabolic pathways, including photosynthesis. Death of the plant occurs typically within a week of application.

Glufosinate-ammonium is versatile in its application, utilized extensively in row crops, vineyards, and orchards. Beyond weed control, it is an industry-standard desiccant for crops such as soybeans and sunflowers. By accelerating the drying process of the canopy and the seeds, it ensures a more uniform harvest and significantly improves the efficiency of combine operations.

Effective application requires thorough coverage of the target weeds, as glufosinate-ammonium exhibits limited translocation within the plant. Farmers are advised to apply the product during periods of active growth, typically under warm and sunny conditions, to maximize the physiological uptake of the active ingredient and ensure rapid control.

Safety precautions are paramount when handling this herbicide. It is considered an irritant, and protective equipment must be worn to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Due to its non-selective nature, drift management is essential to protect adjacent non-tolerant crops from accidental exposure, ensuring that application only targets the intended areas.

  • Broad-spectrum weed control
  • Essential for managing herbicide-resistant weeds
  • Excellent desiccant properties
  • Favorable environmental profile compared to other non-selective herbicides
