Grease (bands, fruit trees)

Description

Grease bands for fruit trees function as a mechanical barrier, designed to intercept and capture crawling pests before they can reach the tree canopy. This method is highly regarded in organic gardening and integrated pest management because it provides effective control without the use of synthetic chemical insecticides that could harm beneficial organisms or leave residues on fruits.

The operational mechanism is based on a non-drying, sticky adhesive substance applied to a band around the tree trunk. As crawling insects—such as winter moth caterpillars, weevils, ants, and certain types of aphids—attempt to migrate upward from the soil, they become stuck in the grease. Once immobilized, they are unable to reach the foliage or buds, effectively neutralizing their impact on the tree's development.

This method is widely utilized in orchards and home gardens for pome and stone fruits, including apples, pears, cherries, and plums. It is particularly valuable during the early spring, when overwintering larvae begin their ascent, and in late autumn, when adult wingless moths climb the trunk to lay eggs in the canopy.

Successful application requires proper surface preparation. The bark should be smoothed by removing loose scales and debris to ensure the band fits tightly against the trunk. This prevents insects from crawling underneath the trap. The sticky grease should be applied in a consistent, unbroken ring, and special care should be taken to ensure the material does not harm the bark, especially on younger, thin-skinned trees.

  • Cleaning the trunk surface to remove moss and loose bark.
  • Ensuring a tight, gap-free seal around the trunk circumference.
  • Periodic inspection to clear debris or dead insects from the trap.
  • Refreshing the sticky grease coating as it becomes dirty or loses its tackiness.

Safety precautions are essential; always wear protective gloves when handling tree grease to avoid skin contact. It is recommended to monitor the bands to minimize the accidental capture of non-target, beneficial insects. In cases of high pest pressure, consider adding a protective covering over the grease to prevent it from collecting excessive dust or rainwater, which can reduce its long-term efficacy.
