Diatomaceous earth
Description
Diatomaceous earth (kieselgur) is a naturally occurring, sedimentary rock consisting of the fossilized remains of diatoms. In agriculture, it is classified as a mechanical contact insecticide. It is highly valued in sustainable and organic farming systems due to its non-toxic, chemical-free method of controlling a wide variety of arthropod pests.
The insecticidal mode of action of diatomaceous earth is entirely physical rather than biological or chemical. The microscopic particles of the material are sharp and abrasive. When a pest comes into contact with the powder, these particles pierce the insect's exoskeleton. This damage destroys the protective wax layer, causing the insect to rapidly lose body moisture and die from fatal dehydration.
Diatomaceous earth is effectively used on a variety of field crops, greenhouse plants, and in grain storage facilities. It targets a broad spectrum of pests, including aphids, spider mites, thrips, ants, and various stored-product beetles. Because the action is mechanical, insects cannot develop resistance to diatomaceous earth, which is a major advantage over traditional chemical pesticides.
The application of diatomaceous earth requires dry conditions to be effective. The powder should be dusted over the soil surface, plant foliage, or in crevices where pests are active. If the product becomes wet, it loses its abrasive qualities, so repeat applications are often necessary after rainfall or overhead irrigation to maintain a protective barrier for the crops.

Diatomaceous earth is considered safe for mammals, birds, and beneficial pollinators when used correctly, leaving no harmful residues on harvested food crops.
