Lactic acid
Description
Lactic acid (2-hydroxypropanoic acid) is an organic compound classified in modern agronomy as a non-selective contact herbicide of natural origin. It is widely recognized in organic farming systems due to its excellent biodegradability and minimal environmental impact, as it breaks down rapidly into harmless components.
The primary mechanism of action involves the disruption of plant cell membranes upon direct contact with the foliage. Once applied, lactic acid induces severe dehydration of the plant tissues, leading to rapid cell wall breakdown, visible chlorosis, and the subsequent desiccation of the treated weeds.
It is primarily utilized for the control of young annual broad-leaved and grass weeds. The herbicide is effectively used for inter-row weed management, clearing pathways, and maintaining vegetation-free zones around greenhouses or specialized agricultural structures where traditional synthetic chemicals are restricted.
The efficacy of lactic acid is highly dependent on environmental variables. Optimal results are achieved when applications are performed under sunny, warm, and dry conditions, as these factors significantly accelerate the moisture loss from plant tissues, thereby enhancing the lethal effect on the weeds.
- Rapid burndown effect on young vegetative growth.
- Environmentally friendly and fully biodegradable.
- No residual soil activity, allowing for immediate replanting.
- Safe for use in sensitive areas and organic crop rotations.
Despite its organic origin, handling lactic acid requires adherence to safety protocols. It can cause irritation to the skin and serious eye irritation if direct contact occurs. Therefore, professional applicators should always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and safety glasses, during mixing and spraying operations.
