Description
Mesosulfuron-methyl is a powerful systemic herbicide belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical family. It is primarily utilized in modern agriculture for post-emergence weed control, specifically targeting a broad range of annual grass weeds and certain broadleaf species in cereal production.
The mode of action of this substance involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS). By blocking this crucial enzyme, mesosulfuron-methyl halts the biosynthesis of essential branched-chain amino acids, such as leucine, isoleucine, and valine, leading to the rapid arrest of plant growth and eventual death of the weeds.
It is mainly applied to winter and spring wheat fields. The herbicide is highly effective against challenging grass weeds such as blackgrass, meadow foxtail, and wild oats. Its selectivity is maintained through the rapid metabolic degradation of the active ingredient within the tissues of the cereal crop, allowing for effective weed removal without harming the yield.
Application strategies often involve the use of safeners, such as mefenpyr-diethyl. These compounds are crucial for enhancing the tolerance of the wheat crop to the herbicide, ensuring safety during the application process, and allowing the product to be used across various environmental conditions.
