Orange oil

Orange oil is a natural active substance derived from the cold pressing of citrus peels. In modern agriculture, it is recognized as a high-efficacy biopesticide used for pest and disease control in both conventional and organic farming systems. It is valued for its rapid degradation and low environmental toxicity, making it an excellent component for integrated pest management (IPM).

Chemically, orange oil is composed primarily of terpenes, with d-limonene being the most active component. The mode of action is purely physical and contact-based: the oil dissolves the waxy cuticle of insects, mites, and the cell walls of fungal spores. This disruption leads to immediate loss of body fluids, causing rapid dehydration and death of the target pest or pathogen.

The substance acts as both an insecticide/acaricide and a fungicide, making it a versatile tool for growers. Common targets include aphids, whiteflies, thrips, spider mites, as well as powdery mildew and botrytis. It is widely applied to greenhouse vegetables, small fruits, orchard trees, and vines to suppress outbreaks of pests and slow the spread of fungal diseases.

Application requires uniform and thorough spray coverage because orange oil does not possess systemic mobility within the plant. Farmers are advised to spray early in the morning or late in the afternoon to minimize the risk of phytotoxicity from high heat or intense sunlight. While the substance is generally safe, growers should perform compatibility tests when tank-mixing with other agrochemicals.

Safety measures include the use of protective gloves and eye protection, as the concentrated oil can be an irritant to sensitive skin and eyes. The product must be stored in a cool, ventilated area away from ignition sources due to its flammable nature. A major benefit for producers is the very short or non-existent pre-harvest interval, facilitating flexible crop management right up until harvest time.
