Active ingredient

Paclobutrazol

Description

Paclobutrazol is a systemic plant growth regulator belonging to the triazole chemical class. While primarily utilized to modify plant growth and development, it also exhibits significant fungicidal properties, offering protection against various fungal diseases in agricultural and horticultural practices.

The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of gibberellin biosynthesis in plant tissues. Specifically, it blocks the oxidation of ent-kaurene to kaurenoic acid, which results in shortened internodes, increased stem thickness, and a redirection of plant energy toward root system development and chlorophyll synthesis.

This substance is widely used across various sectors, including vegetable production, floriculture, and orchards. It is effectively employed to prevent lodging in cereal crops, enhance the quality and robustness of vegetable seedlings, and promote compact growth habits in ornamental shrubs and fruit trees.

When applying paclobutrazol, precise dosage control is critical. Excessive application rates can cause extreme growth stunting, delayed maturity, and potential yield reduction. Its efficacy is highly dependent on the application method, which can include both foliar spraying and soil drenching depending on the target crop.

  • Growth control to prevent lodging in cereal crops.
  • Strengthening of root systems for increased stress tolerance.
  • Suppression of fungal pathogens like powdery mildew and rust.
  • Improvement of aesthetic and commercial quality in ornamental plants.

Safety and handling protocols must be strictly followed when using paclobutrazol. As a moderately toxic compound, users should wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including respirators and gloves, to prevent skin and respiratory exposure. Residual product must be disposed of in compliance with local environmental regulations.
