Paraffin oil

Paraffin oil (CAS 64742-54-7) is a refined mineral oil commonly used in agricultural pest management as an insecticide and acaricide. Its chemical structure consists of purified hydrocarbons, which effectively coat targeted surfaces to provide reliable control against various plant-damaging organisms.

The primary mode of action is physical rather than chemical. When sprayed on pests or their eggs, the oil creates a film that blocks the respiratory pores (spiracles), leading to suffocation. This contact-based action makes it a powerful tool, particularly because pests cannot develop resistance to such physical disruption of their life cycles.

This substance is widely used on fruit trees, ornamental plants, and vegetable crops. It is highly effective against immobile or slow-moving pests such as scale insects, mealybugs, mites, aphids, and whiteflies. It is often employed during the dormant season to eliminate overwintering populations before they become active in the spring.

Application requires careful attention to environmental conditions. It should not be applied under extreme heat (typically above 25°C) or near freezing temperatures, as these conditions increase the risk of phytotoxicity. Proper agitation of the spray mixture is essential, as paraffin oil can separate if left standing for extended periods.
