Paraffin oil (CAS 8042-47-5) is a highly refined mineral oil widely utilized in agriculture as a contact insecticide, acaricide, and fungicide. It is classified as a petroleum-based mineral oil and exerts its control through physical rather than biological or systemic means, making it a reliable tool in integrated pest management.

The primary mechanism of action involves coating the surfaces of pests, their eggs, and larvae with a thin oil film. This physical barrier blocks the respiratory spiracles of insects and mites, leading to death by suffocation. Regarding fungal control, the oil layer physically inhibits the germination of fungal spores and prevents mycelial growth on leaf surfaces.

This substance is commonly used in orchards, vineyards, and ornamental gardens to manage overwintering populations of pests such as scale insects, mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Because of its physical mode of action, pests are unlikely to develop resistance, which is a significant benefit compared to conventional chemical insecticides.

Optimal application timing is crucial, typically during the early spring before bud break, when pests emerge from their winter dormancy. It is vital to avoid spraying during extreme temperatures (above 30°C) or near freezing conditions, as this can increase the risk of phytotoxicity and stress the plants.

When applying paraffin oil, it is essential to ensure full coverage of the plant surface for effective control. Users must be cautious with tank mixing; avoid combining with sulfur-based products, copper-based fungicides, or highly alkaline pesticides, as these combinations can damage sensitive foliage and fruits.
