Paraffin oil

Paraffin oil is a high-purity mineral oil widely used in integrated pest management as a powerful contact insecticide and acaricide. Its classification as a physical control agent makes it an essential tool for growers aiming to reduce the usage of synthetic chemicals in orchards and ornamental gardens.

The mode of action of paraffin oil is entirely mechanical. Once applied, the oil forms a thin, uniform film over the surface of the plant and the pest. This film effectively smothers the insect by plugging its spiracles, which are the breathing pores, leading to rapid death by asphyxiation. This physical process ensures that insects cannot develop genetic resistance to the treatment.

This substance is primarily targeted at soft-bodied pests or those that remain stationary for long periods, such as scale insects, mealybugs, aphids, and various mite species. It is highly valued for its efficacy in controlling the overwintering stages of these pests, making it a cornerstone for early-season dormant sprays in fruit production.

Application requires careful attention to environmental conditions. It should not be applied under extreme heat (above 25°C) or on water-stressed plants, as this may increase the risk of phytotoxicity and leaf burn. Ensuring full coverage is critical, as the product only works where the oil film makes direct contact with the targeted organism.

Users must be strictly aware of chemical incompatibility issues. Paraffin oil should never be mixed with sulfur-containing products, as the combination can lead to severe plant damage. Additionally, a sufficient buffer period is required between applying sulfur and oil treatments to prevent residual chemical reactions that could harm the crops.
