Description
Phorate is a potent systemic insecticide and acaricide that belongs to the organophosphate chemical class. It is characterized by high biological activity and is primarily used in agricultural settings to provide long-lasting protection for emerging seedlings against a wide range of soil-dwelling and sap-sucking pests.
The primary mode of action for Phorate involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase within the insect's nervous system. By blocking this enzyme, the chemical prevents the breakdown of neurotransmitters, causing a continuous transmission of nerve impulses. This leads to paralysis and eventual death of the target pest shortly after exposure or ingestion.
Phorate is traditionally applied in granular form directly into the soil at the time of planting. This placement is critical for its efficacy, as it allows the root system to absorb the compound systemically and distribute it throughout the growing plant tissue.
