It is a highly specialized plant growth regulator (PGR) designed to manage vegetative development in various agricultural crops rather than acting as a traditional herbicide, fungicide, or insecticide.

The mode of action for prohexadione involves the inhibition of the biosynthesis of gibberellins, which are natural plant hormones responsible for stem elongation. By blocking specific enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway, the compound effectively limits internode growth, resulting in shorter, stronger stems and a more compact plant architecture.

The primary use of this substance is in high-intensity fruit production, particularly for apple and pear orchards. By applying prohexadione, growers can reduce the need for labor-intensive summer pruning, improve light penetration into the tree canopy, and enhance fruit quality.
