Description
Sodium arsenite is an inorganic chemical compound that historically served as a potent agricultural pesticide. Although its use has been heavily restricted or banned globally due to its severe toxicity to humans and the environment, it remains a significant topic in the context of chemical plant protection history and industrial toxicology.
Chemically, sodium arsenite acts as an inorganic salt of arsenious acid. It was primarily used as a non-selective contact herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide. Its ability to disrupt cellular metabolism made it an effective agent for rapid vegetation control, pest suppression, and desiccation of crops before harvest.
The mechanism of action for sodium arsenite is based on the inhibition of cellular respiration and enzyme activity. By interfering with oxidative phosphorylation, the arsenic ions prevent cells from producing necessary energy, leading to rapid cell death. This process is non-selective, meaning the chemical affects almost any biological organism it encounters.
In past agricultural practices, sodium arsenite was utilized for controlling weeds on non-cropland areas, managing orchard pests such as scales and mites, and as a desiccant for potato crops. Its efficacy allowed for rapid clearance of vegetation, but the lack of selectivity often posed risks to surrounding crops if the application was not strictly controlled.
