Description
Sodium fluosilicate, often referred to as sodium silicofluoride, is an inorganic chemical compound that functions primarily as a stomach poison insecticide in agricultural settings. It is typically formulated as a white, fine-grained crystalline powder. Due to its limited water solubility, it is rarely applied as a foliar spray, but instead serves as a key component in bait formulations and soil treatment programs.
The mode of action of this substance is strictly intestinal. Once a pest consumes the treated bait or foliage, the sodium fluosilicate reacts with the acidic environment of the insect’s digestive tract. This chemical interaction releases fluoride ions, which disrupt the pest's enzymatic processes. This metabolic interference rapidly leads to the cessation of feeding, followed by systemic failure and death of the insect.
This compound is specifically utilized for controlling chewing pests that cause significant economic damage to various crops. It is particularly effective against migratory locusts, mole crickets, and various subterranean larvae like wireworms. By placing the bait strategically near plant roots or in rows, farmers can protect young seedlings from being destroyed by soil-dwelling invertebrates before they emerge or during early growth stages.
Practical application requires a strategic approach. It is essential to ensure that the bait remains attractive to the target pests while minimizing exposure to beneficial insects. Environmental conditions, such as high humidity, can occasionally affect the stability of the bait.
