Active ingredient

Triflumuron

Description

Triflumuron is a potent active ingredient belonging to the benzoylurea chemical class. It functions as an insect growth regulator (IGR), playing a vital role in modern integrated pest management strategies by targeting specific developmental stages of harmful insects rather than providing a broad-spectrum nerve-based kill.

The mode of action of triflumuron is based on the inhibition of chitin synthesis. Chitin is the fundamental structural component of an insect's exoskeleton. By disrupting this synthesis, the substance prevents insects from completing the molting process properly. Consequently, larvae fail to develop into their next instar and eventually die due to structural defects or an inability to feed.

This active substance is primarily used to control lepidopterous larvae and certain coleopterous species in fruit trees, field crops, and vegetable gardens. Its highly selective nature allows for better preservation of beneficial predator and parasitoid insect populations, provided that the application timing is correctly aligned with the pest life cycle.

Effective application requires targeting the early larval stages, as the compound is most effective when ingested or contacted during periods of active molting. Since triflumuron lacks significant systemic mobility within the plant, thorough coverage of the foliage and stems using adequate spray volumes is essential to ensure maximum efficacy and protection.

  • Excellent residual activity on plant surfaces.
  • Reduced impact on non-target beneficial species.
  • Resistance management tool when rotated with other insecticide classes.
  • High stability under various environmental conditions.

Safety remains a priority when handling triflumuron. Operators should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, long sleeves, and masks to avoid direct exposure. While the compound has low toxicity toward mammals, it is important to strictly follow environmental guidelines to prevent contamination of aquatic systems and to avoid applications during peak pollinator activity.
