Ammonification serves as the initial stage of nitrogen mineralization. It is carried out by a wide variety of soil bacteria and fungi that break down proteins, amino acids, and other organic residues. The rate of this process is heavily influenced by soil temperature, moisture levels, and oxygen availability.
Farmers rely on this process to unlock nutrients from crop residues, green manures, and compost. Practical consideration: to maximize efficiency, soil aeration and proper pH levels must be maintained. If the soil is waterlogged, the process slows down significantly, potentially causing nitrogen losses through gaseous ammonia emissions.
Common mistakes: applying organic matter to soils with extreme pH values or under excessively dry conditions, which severely inhibits microbial metabolic activity.
