Minimum tillage

A conservation tillage system that reduces the frequency and depth of mechanical soil disturbance to improve soil structure and moisture retention.

Также говорят: min-till, conservation tillage, reduced tillage

The core objective of minimum tillage is to minimize mechanical impact on the soil, which helps maintain moisture levels, prevents erosion, and supports healthy soil biological activity. This approach replaces intensive moldboard plowing with shallower loosening techniques or direct seeding.

This system is particularly beneficial for fields susceptible to erosion or in areas experiencing water scarcity. When implementing this practice, farmers must pay close attention to weed and pest management, as the lack of soil inversion significantly alters the field's pest pressure profile.

A common mistake is failing to properly manage crop residues; if residues are not evenly distributed, it can cause significant issues with seed placement and uniform crop emergence. Additionally, improper residue management may create an environment conducive to the rapid spread of soil-borne pathogens.
