Slotting

An agricultural technique of cutting narrow vertical slots in the soil to improve water infiltration and aeration within the root zone.

Также говорят: soil slotting, subsoil slotting, slot-tillage

Slotting is primarily used on heavy, compacted, or poorly drained soils. The main purpose of this technique is to break the plow pan and create pathways for deep infiltration of precipitation into the lower soil horizons, which prevents surface runoff and soil erosion.

The operation is performed in autumn or spring, depending on field moisture, using specialized slotting equipment. The effectiveness of the procedure depends on the working depth and the soil structure condition. Proper slotting promotes the development of strong root systems and increases crop resilience to drought.

Typical mistakes include performing slotting when the soil is too wet, which causes smearing of the slot walls, and excessive spacing between passes, which reduces the overall moisture retention effect.
