Mulching

Mulching is the agricultural practice of covering the soil surface with organic or inorganic materials to improve soil health and plant growth.

Также говорят: soil covering, mulch application

Mulching is essential for moisture retention, temperature regulation, and weed suppression. By insulating the soil, it prevents rapid evaporation in hot weather and protects sensitive root systems from extreme cold during the winter months.

Common materials include wood chips, straw, compost, or landscape fabric. Farmers and gardeners apply these materials once the soil has warmed up. A frequent mistake is placing the mulch too deep or directly against the stems, which can encourage pests, fungal growth, or root rot.
