Anthemis

Anthemis (common names include chamomile or dog-fennel) belongs to the Asteraceae family. This genus contains several species that are recognized as aggressive weeds in agricultural systems globally. These plants are characterized by their rapid development and high adaptability, often appearing in vast quantities in both winter and summer crops.

These weeds are commonly found in agricultural fields, pastures, and disturbed lands. They exhibit a high preference for sunny, nutrient-rich soils and are particularly problematic in cereal crops, such as wheat and barley. Their presence can be identified by their fern-like foliage and daisy-like flowers, which emerge as a major threat to agricultural productivity.

The biology of Anthemis is centered around its prolific seed production. A single plant can disperse a significant number of seeds, which remain viable in the soil for several seasons. The germination process is relatively flexible, occurring under various environmental conditions, allowing the weed to establish itself early in the growing season and dominate the field space.

The damage caused by Anthemis is largely related to resource depletion. As an aggressive competitor, it deprives crops of sunlight, moisture, and essential soil nutrients. This direct competition reduces the biomass and yields of the main crop. Furthermore, heavy infestation often interferes with harvesting machinery and leads to contamination of the harvested grain yield.

To control Anthemis effectively, an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy is required. Agronomic methods include:
