Hairy bindweed

Hairy bindweed (lat. Calystegia pulchra) is a perennial herbaceous climbing plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. It is classified as a creeping perennial weed that possesses a remarkable capacity for vegetative regeneration. Its stems are highly flexible and capable of twining around supporting structures, including agricultural crops.

This species is found predominantly in temperate climates across Europe and beyond. It thrives in fertile, moist soils and is frequently observed in arable fields, hedge banks, and perennial crop systems. In agriculture, it is particularly problematic in cereal crops, row crops, and horticultural plantations where competition for resources is high.

The biology of Hairy bindweed is driven by a deep and resilient root system capable of overwintering and regenerating even after severe mechanical disruption. The plant produces showy flowers throughout the summer, resulting in seeds that can persist in the soil seed bank for several years. This makes it a persistent issue for land management.

The damage caused by Hairy bindweed is primarily due to its aggressive growth habit. By enveloping the stems of crops, it causes lodging, creates excessive shade, and competes intensely for soil moisture and nutrients. This interference significantly reduces photosynthetic efficiency and leads to substantial yield losses at harvest time.

Integrated control measures are necessary for effective management:

• Deep tillage techniques to mechanically stress and fragment the root network.
• Consistent fallow maintenance through repeated cultivation to exhaust root carbohydrate stores.
• Strategic application of systemic herbicides (e.g., glyphosate) after harvest to translocate the active ingredient into the rhizomes.
• Use of selective post-emergence herbicides in cereal crops to suppress vegetative growth.
