Hedge bindweed

Hedge bindweed (lat. Calystegia sepium) is a perennial climbing weed belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Characterized by its twining, fast-growing stems, it can reach significant heights by using surrounding vegetation or crop stalks as supports. It is widely recognized by farmers as a serious invasive threat to agricultural production systems globally.

This weed is commonly found in fertile, moist soils across temperate regions. It frequently infests row crops, orchards, and cereal fields. Its presence is most problematic in environments where moisture is abundant, allowing the bindweed to establish a deep and extensive root network that competes directly with agricultural crops for space, light, and soil nutrients.

The biology of Calystegia sepium is defined by its highly persistent rhizome system. These underground stems can reach depths of over a meter, making them difficult to eradicate through simple surface tillage. The plant propagates effectively through vegetative fragmentation, where small root pieces left behind after mechanical operations can generate new, vigorous colonies of weeds.

The economic damage caused by hedge bindweed is substantial. By smothering crops, it reduces photosynthetic efficiency, promotes lodging, and increases humidity levels around the crop, which can lead to various plant diseases. Furthermore, the tangled vines interfere with harvesting machinery, often causing significant downtime and increasing operational costs for farmers.

Integrated weed management is essential for effective control. Cultural practices, such as deep plowing and timely cultivation, are necessary to stress and deplete the carbohydrate reserves in the rhizomes. Chemical control is usually achieved through the application of systemic herbicides. Best results are obtained when herbicides are applied during the active growth phase, ensuring maximum translocation of the active ingredient into the root system.
