Large bindweed (lat. Calystegia sylvatica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. It is recognized as a troublesome rhizomatous weed in agricultural landscapes, known for its aggressive growth habit and extensive underground root system that makes eradication difficult.

The plant is commonly found in temperate regions, thriving in moist, fertile soils. It frequently infests row crops, cereals, orchards, and vineyards, where it exploits the vertical structure of the crops to climb and spread, ultimately outcompeting the desired plants for sunlight and essential nutrients.

The biology of Calystegia sylvatica is defined by deep-reaching, creeping rhizomes that can extend over a meter below the soil surface. The vining stems can reach several meters in length, allowing the weed to form dense mats that blanket entire areas, leading to severe crop lodging and mechanical harvesting challenges.
