Swamp dodder

Swamp dodder (Latin: Cuscuta gronovii) is a dangerous obligate stem parasite belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. As a parasitic annual weed, it lacks both roots and chlorophyll, relying entirely on the host plant for nutrients, water, and minerals. It is considered a significant threat to agriculture and biodiversity in infested regions.

Originally native to North America, this species has spread widely, often colonizing wetlands, riverbanks, and agricultural fields. It is known to parasitize a broad variety of hosts, including vegetable crops, legumes, ornamental plants, and various wild herbaceous species. Its ability to adapt to different hosts makes it a persistent agricultural pest.

The biology of Cuscuta gronovii is defined by its rapid vegetative growth. Once a seedling finds a host, it coils around the stem and develops haustoria—specialized structures that penetrate the host's vascular system. Its seeds are highly persistent, capable of remaining dormant and viable in the soil for several years, which allows for repeated infestations even after initial clearing.

The economic impact of swamp dodder is severe. Infested plants show significant growth reduction, reduced yields, and sometimes total mortality. Beyond direct nutrient theft, the parasite acts as a vector for various viral diseases, further complicating crop protection and reducing the marketability of harvested products due to contamination with dodder seeds.

Effective management requires an integrated approach including:

• Strict seed sanitation to prevent the introduction of dodder seeds into fields.
• Deep plowing to bury seeds, which prevents them from successfully germinating and reaching a host.
• Implementing long-term crop rotation with resistant or non-host plant species.
• Spot treatment of infected areas with contact herbicides to prevent the parasite from setting seeds.
• Prompt mechanical removal and destruction of infested plants before the parasite flowers and seeds mature.
