Japanese azolla (Azolla japonica) is a species of small floating aquatic fern belonging to the Salviniaceae family. It is widely recognized in agriculture for its symbiotic relationship with the cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae, which lives in its leaf cavities and performs atmospheric nitrogen fixation, making the plant a highly efficient bio-fertilizer.

The native range of this species covers East Asia, particularly Japan and surrounding regions. It naturally thrives in still or slow-moving freshwater environments such as marshes, ponds, and rice paddies. Due to its remarkable ability to enrich soil naturally, it has been introduced to various other regions globally as a sustainable agricultural asset.

Botanically, Japanese azolla consists of delicate fronds with scale-like leaves and submerged roots. Its growth habit is rapid and clonal, primarily reproducing through fragmentation. Under optimal conditions, including sufficient sunlight and moderate temperatures, the plant can rapidly cover the surface of a body of water, creating a dense green mat that suppresses aquatic weed growth.

Successful cultivation requires maintenance of water pH levels and adequate solar exposure. In agricultural practice, it is most commonly utilized in paddy fields. As it grows, the plant fixes nitrogen, which becomes available to crops after the azolla dies and decomposes. It is sensitive to extreme cold and desiccation, which dictates the timing of its planting and harvesting seasons in temperate climates.

The primary agricultural applications include:

  • Utilization as a high-protein feed additive for poultry, swine, and fish.
  • Application as a green manure to increase soil nitrogen content.
