Cypress-like clubmoss (Diphasiastrum tristachyum) is a perennial, spore-bearing plant belonging to the Lycopodiaceae family. Unlike traditional agricultural crops, this species is primarily valued as a significant component of forest ecosystems, playing a vital role in maintaining the biological diversity of coniferous forest zones.

Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its deep, branching rhizome system and distinct fan-like, glaucous-green aerial shoots. Its most prominent feature is the presence of three, sometimes more, yellowish strobili (spore-bearing cones) borne on long peduncles, which provides the species with its taxonomic identity.

The natural range of the species encompasses the northern temperate zones of Eurasia and North America. It thrives in well-drained, acidic, and sandy soils, typically found in open pine forests or heathlands. Its survival is strictly dependent on a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi, which makes it highly sensitive to soil disturbance and chemical changes.

From a utilization perspective, the plant has historically been used in traditional medicine and pharmacy due to the presence of specific alkaloids in its biomass.
