The plant has a cosmopolitan distribution, native to temperate and tropical regions across North America and Eurasia. It thrives in diverse wetland environments, including the margins of freshwater ponds, marshes, and even brackish estuaries, showcasing its significant environmental adaptability.
Botanically, this species is characterized by its hair-like, bright green culms that typically grow to a height of 3 to 10 centimeters.
