Few-flowered spike-rush

Few-flowered spike-rush (lat. Eleocharis quinqueflora) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. Within agricultural practices, this species is categorized as a specialized crop for wet meadows and land reclamation zones, where conventional crop production is limited by high moisture levels and poor soil aeration.

The native range of the species encompasses the temperate and cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America. It is commonly found in peat bogs, marshes, and along the margins of lakes and streams, showing a high level of adaptation to fluctuating water tables and anaerobic soil environments.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by slender, erect stems growing 5–25 cm tall, tipped with distinct, small spikelets. These spikelets contain typically 3 to 7 florets. The root system is stoloniferous, allowing the plant to spread horizontally and form dense, stable mats of sod that are highly effective at preventing soil erosion in saturated conditions.

Cultivation requirements involve maintaining specific hydrological conditions. The plant thrives in acidic to neutral peaty soils that remain consistently moist throughout the growing season. While not a forage crop of primary industrial importance, it is utilized in sustainable agriculture for managing high-water-table fields, acting as a natural soil stabilizer.

The primary economic uses of the few-flowered spike-rush include wetland restoration, phytoremediation of agricultural runoff, and use in ornamental landscape architecture for ponds and water gardens. Its ability to colonize difficult terrains makes it an important component in managing the stability of semi-aquatic landscapes within an agricultural framework.
