Eremophila sturtii, commonly known as the turpentine bush, is a species of flowering plant in the family Scrophulariaceae. This shrub is highly regarded in arid-zone agriculture for its remarkable ability to thrive in extremely dry environments where few other perennial species can survive.
The plant originates from the arid and semi-arid regions of inland Australia. Its native range spans across extensive drylands, where it acts as a stabilizing agent for sandy and stony soils. It is well-adapted to the harsh cycle of long droughts interrupted by irregular, intense precipitation events.
Botanically, it presents as a dense, woody shrub reaching heights of 2–3 meters. The leaves are typically narrow, linear, and often covered in a resinous or waxy substance, which serves to reduce water loss. The tubular flowers, ranging from white to deep violet, are structurally specialized to be pollinated by local insect and bird species.
