Botanically, the plant features flattened, branched stems that can reach several centimeters in length. Its leaves are arranged in two distinct rows, providing a rigid, symmetrical structure. This moss anchors itself to substrates using rhizoids, which allow it to establish a foothold on wet rocks, wood, or damp soil in its natural habitat.

The native range of this species extends across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is frequently found in calciphilous conditions, often near calcareous seeps, stream banks, and damp forest floors. These environments provide the necessary humidity and stable mineral content required for its long-term survival.

Cultivation requirements involve maintaining high humidity and avoiding direct, harsh sunlight. In an aquarium or vivarium setting, the moss prefers cool to moderate temperatures and clean, flowing water. It is considered an excellent subject for beginners in bryology due to its robust nature, provided that humidity levels are strictly controlled.

The practical application of Fissidens adiantoides is primarily ornamental. It is widely used in high-end aquascaping to create lush, green foregrounds or to cover rocky surfaces in paludariums. Regarding plant health, it is generally resistant, but may suffer from overgrowth by filamentous algae or fungal infections if the airflow or water circulation is stagnant.
