The native distribution of this moss spans temperate regions of Europe, Central Asia, and North America. It is typically found in lotic ecosystems, such as rivers and streams, where it adheres to submerged limestone, rocks, or woody debris in zones subject to fluctuating water levels.
The botanical structure of Fissidens crassipes is characterized by distichous leaves that form dense, dark-green cushions.
