Desert Olive

Forestiera neomexicana, commonly referred to as the Desert Olive, is a deciduous shrub within the Oleaceae (Olive) family. This species is highly regarded in sustainable landscaping for its rugged nature and remarkable ability to thrive in challenging environments where water availability is limited and soil conditions are poor.

Native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, this shrub naturally inhabits riparian zones, canyons, and rocky hillsides. Its evolutionary adaptation to these arid environments has resulted in a robust root system and efficient water-use mechanisms, allowing it to flourish under intense sun and high summer temperatures that would stress many other ornamental plants.

Botanically, the Desert Olive reaches a height of 10 to 12 feet. It features lance-shaped, grayish-green foliage and produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers in the early spring, often before the leaves emerge. The small, dark drupes that follow serve as a vital food resource for various avian species, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly garden designs.

Cultivation of Forestiera neomexicana is relatively straightforward, as it demands minimal intervention. It prefers well-drained soils and performs exceptionally well in alkaline conditions. Once established, it requires very little supplemental irrigation. Pruning should be kept to a minimum, focusing mainly on removing dead wood or shaping for specific landscape requirements during the dormant season.

From a management perspective, the plant is primarily used for erosion control, hedges, and windbreaks in xeriscaping projects.
