Gazania maritima

Gazania maritima is a perennial herbaceous plant species belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is recognized as a specialized coastal plant, well-adapted to the harsh environments of maritime dunes and sandy soils where salinity and wind are constant factors.

Native to the coastal regions of South Africa, this species thrives in full sun exposure. Its evolutionary development in sandy, nutrient-poor soils has equipped the plant with high drought tolerance, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and coastal garden landscaping.

Botanically, it features a low-growing rosette of leaves that often exhibit a silvery pubescence on the underside, which acts as a protective mechanism against water loss. The agricultural requirements for Gazania maritima center on well-draining soil and minimal irrigation. Over-watering is the most common mistake in its cultivation, leading to root rot. Ideally, the soil should be sandy or gritty, mimicking its natural habitat, with very little organic matter required.
