Treasure flower (Gazania rigens leucolaena) is a herbaceous ornamental plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Known for its intense color palette and unique reaction to solar radiation, this species is highly valued in horticulture. Although it is a perennial in warmer climates, it is typically managed as an annual in cooler regions to ensure optimal flowering performance throughout the growing season.
Originating from Southern Africa, the Treasure flower has adapted to harsh, arid environments. Its natural distribution is widespread in regions characterized by Mediterranean or subtropical climates, where it thrives in sandy, nutrient-poor soils. Currently, it is cultivated worldwide as a commercial ornamental crop for both private gardens and large-scale public landscaping projects.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a rosette growth habit and narrow leaves covered with dense silver hairs on the underside, which aids in moisture retention. The flowers are daisy-like and feature a high degree of heliotropism; the ray florets close tight during overcast weather or night hours to protect the reproductive organs from humidity and temperature drops. The root system is robust and deep-reaching, allowing the plant to tolerate long periods of drought.
The agrotechnical requirements for growing Gazania rigens are centered on full sun exposure and excellent soil drainage. The crop does not tolerate waterlogging, which often leads to root rot. Soils should be sandy or loamy with low organic content, as overly fertile soils tend to encourage excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production.
