Blue hair grass

Blue hair grass (scientific name: Koeleria glauca) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This ornamental grass is highly valued for its striking glaucous-blue foliage, compact habit, and exceptional tolerance for harsh, dry environmental conditions.

Native to sandy soils, dunes, and dry grasslands across Europe and parts of Western Asia, this plant has evolved to thrive in nutrient-poor environments. Its natural habitat dictates its physiological needs, making it an ideal choice for xeriscaping and sustainable garden design in temperate regions.

Botanically, the plant forms dense, tufted mounds typically reaching heights of 25–40 cm. The narrow, rigid leaves are coated with a fine, waxy bloom, giving them their characteristic blue-grey color. In early summer, the grass produces attractive, cylindrical, silver-green panicles that age gracefully throughout the season.

Cultivation requirements for blue hair grass are minimal but specific. It demands full sun exposure and well-draining soil, preferably sandy or stony. The species is highly susceptible to root rot if grown in heavy, waterlogged soils, so adequate drainage is the most critical factor in successful establishment.

Maintenance involves little more than removing old, dead foliage in early spring to encourage new growth. It is relatively free from major pests and diseases, provided that air circulation is maintained and moisture levels are kept low. The species is used for rock gardens, borders, and as a low-maintenance ground cover.
