Sea lavender (Limonium auriculae-ursifolium) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Plumbaginaceae family. This species is highly valued in horticulture for its resilient nature, distinct foliage, and its ability to produce long-lasting inflorescences that remain decorative well into the autumn, making it a favorite for dry arrangements.
The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, specifically showing a localized distribution in areas such as the Balearic Islands. Its natural habitat is typically rocky and saline coastal environments. This ecological background has equipped the species with high tolerance to poor soil quality and significant resistance to salt spray and saline conditions.
Botanically, Limonium auriculae-ursifolium is characterized by a basal rosette of leathery, tongue-shaped leaves that can withstand direct sun exposure. The flower stalks emerge from the center of the rosette, reaching up to half a meter in height. The inflorescence is a complex panicle composed of numerous small, delicate flowers, usually in shades of violet or lavender, protected by prominent papery bracts.
Agricultural requirements for successful cultivation focus on providing excellent drainage. This plant cannot thrive in waterlogged conditions, which lead to root rot. Ideally, it should be planted in well-draining, sandy, or rocky soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
