The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, typically found in coastal areas where it has adapted to saline, rocky, and low-nutrient soils. This evolutionary history makes it an excellent candidate for xeriscaping, as it requires minimal supplemental irrigation once established.

Botanically, the plant features a basal rosette of leathery leaves with elongated, branched stems that bear numerous small, densely clustered flowers.
