Commonly referred to as the "Rain Tree," it earned this name due to the insects (often froghoppers) on its leaves that cause a liquid secretion, giving the impression of rain dripping from the canopy. It is a vital botanical component of the Southern African landscape.
The native distribution of this species spans across the savannahs and open woodlands of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Mozambique. It thrives in regions characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. The tree is well-adapted to high-temperature environments and can endure extended periods of moisture stress without suffering significant damage.
Botanically, it is a medium-sized tree with a spreading, rounded crown and greyish, slightly fissured bark. The leaves are compound and pinnate, offering significant shade during the peak summer heat.
