Notha honeysuckle

The Notha honeysuckle (Lonicera x notha Zab) is a hybrid ornamental shrub belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. This species is a deliberate or natural cross between Lonicera xylosteum and Lonicera tatarica. Its hybridization combines the robust structural qualities of its parent species with an enhanced ability to thrive in a wide variety of temperate environments.

Botanically, it manifests as a deciduous shrub typically reaching a height of 2 to 3 meters. The plant is characterized by a dense, spreading habit with branches covered in brownish bark. The leaves are ovate to elliptic and arranged in opposite pairs, with a characteristic pubescence on the underside, which provides a distinct texture to the foliage throughout the growing season.

The flowering phase occurs in late spring or early summer, producing clusters of blossoms that range from pure white to pinkish shades. These flowers are known for their delicate fragrance. After blooming, the shrub produces inedible, often orange or red berries. It is strictly recommended to treat this plant as a decorative species, as its fruit is not intended for human consumption due to the presence of secondary metabolites.

Regarding cultivation, Lonicera x notha is highly adaptable to various soil types, preferring well-drained, fertile loams with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. It shows remarkable winter hardiness and moderate drought tolerance once established. To ensure optimal growth, it should be planted in full sun to partial shade, and the soil should be kept moderately moist during the initial stages of establishment.
