Mutel's broomrape

Mutel's broomrape (Orobanche mutelii) is an obligate parasitic weed belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. As a holoparasite, it lacks chlorophyll and cannot perform photosynthesis; it relies entirely on its host plant for water, minerals, and carbohydrates, which it draws through specialized root-like structures called haustoria.

The native range of this species extends across the Mediterranean basin and temperate regions of Southern Europe. It thrives in arid and semi-arid climates where host plants are abundant. It is particularly well-adapted to environments with well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils, which facilitate the transmission of its microscopic seeds to the host roots.

Botanically, Mutel's broomrape is characterized by a fleshy, unbranched stem, typically 5–20 cm tall, covered with scale-like leaves. The inflorescence is a spike composed of numerous small, purplish-blue flowers. It does not produce a true root system; instead, it develops a tuberous base that connects to the vascular system of the host plant.

Control of Orobanche mutelii requires a multi-faceted agronomic approach. Key strategies include the use of catch crops that stimulate the germination of broomrape seeds without supporting their development, as well as prolonged crop rotation with non-host species. Sanitation is critical, as the tiny seeds are easily dispersed by wind, water, and agricultural machinery.
