Swamp lousewort

Swamp lousewort (Pedicularis lanceolata) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. Known as a hemiparasite, this plant has evolved to extract nutrients from the root systems of nearby vegetation while still maintaining the ability to perform photosynthesis through its green foliage.

The plant is native to North America, where it thrives in wet meadows, fens, and swampy riparian zones. Its geographic range is strictly defined by the availability of high-moisture soils. Unlike agricultural weeds, it requires a specific ecological balance, making it a sensitive species that reacts negatively to the drainage or alteration of its native wetland habitats.

Botanically, Pedicularis lanceolata is characterized by a sturdy, upright stem reaching up to 90 cm, featuring lance-shaped, serrated leaves. The flowers are pale yellow and typically appear in late summer and early autumn. Its root system is structurally adapted to develop haustoria, which serve as the physical connection point to host plants like sedges or grasses.

For conservation and restoration purposes, it requires soil with high organic matter and consistent moisture levels. Successful propagation is notoriously difficult without the presence of established host species, which the seedling needs to parasitize shortly after germination to survive.
