Description

Riccia cavernosa is a thallose liverwort species belonging to the Ricciaceae family. Unlike vascular plants, this bryophyte lacks true roots, stems, and leaves, instead forming small, bright green rosettes that spread across moist soil surfaces.

The species has a cosmopolitan distribution, occurring naturally across various continents in both temperate and tropical zones. It is commonly found in damp environments, such as exposed mudflats, riverbanks, and areas prone to seasonal flooding or water retention.

Botanically, the thallus of the plant is characterized by internal air chambers, which give the species its name and provide buoyancy in aquatic environments. Reproduction is typically achieved through both spore dispersal and the fragmentation of the thallus, allowing the plant to colonize new patches of wet ground rapidly.

Regarding environmental requirements, Riccia cavernosa thrives in areas with consistent moisture and high light availability. It is highly sensitive to desiccation, meaning its presence is a reliable indicator of prolonged soil dampness and stable hydrological conditions in its habitat.

While not a conventional agricultural crop, it provides valuable ecosystem services. By stabilizing loose soil on damp banks, it helps mitigate surface erosion. In some specialized contexts, it is studied for its ability to quickly cover disturbed wet ground, playing a pioneer role in primary succession.
