Unlike common aquatic mosses, this species is specialized for ephemeral habitats, typically colonizing exposed, moist substrates such as mudflats, pond margins, and receding shorelines that experience periodic flooding and drying cycles.
The distribution of this species spans across the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. It thrives in regions where water levels fluctuate significantly throughout the growing season. The plant's survival strategy relies on its ability to rapidly colonize bare soil once the water level drops, making it a pioneer species in dynamic wetland environments.
Botanically, it forms small, dichotomously branched rosettes of thalli. The color of the thallus is often distinctive, ranging from deep green to a deep purple-red, which is a common adaptation to sun-exposed conditions found on dry riverbeds or pond edges. Reproduction is primarily mediated by spores that remain dormant in the soil during periods of extreme desiccation.
Cultivation of Riccia huebeneriana requires a highly specific micro-environment. It is not suitable for standard agricultural use, but in research or botanical collections, it necessitates nutrient-rich, silty or clayey soil with high light exposure.
