In an agricultural context, it is cultivated in regions that can maintain warm temperatures throughout the year. It does not tolerate freezing conditions, as low temperatures lead to rapid tissue decay and the loss of the floating mat, necessitating climate-controlled facilities in non-tropical zones.

Botanically, the plant features leaves covered in complex trichomes, which are small hair-like structures that trap air and ensure the plant remains buoyant. The root system consists of specialized submerged leaves that absorb minerals directly from the water column.
