The natural range of Sphagnum molle covers temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, primarily in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. It thrives in bog environments, wet heathlands, and areas with high annual precipitation and poor, acidic soil conditions, which are typical for nutrient-poor peatland ecosystems.
Botanically, this species forms dense, soft cushions of light green or yellowish coloration. The stem is thin and brittle, and the branches are densely arranged, allowing the moss to create a thick mat. Its leaf anatomy is highly specialized to facilitate the absorption and storage of water, which is essential for surviving fluctuating moisture levels.
Agrotechnical requirements for cultivating Sphagnum molle are strictly defined by its adaptation to bog life. Growers must maintain a consistent acidic environment (pH below 5.0) and utilize high-purity water, as mineral salts or tap water with high lime content can cause the moss to decline rapidly. Shade or partial sun is preferred to prevent desiccation and overheating of the moss beds.
